Cyber or Internet Fraud

 

Cyber or internet fraud is the most common and threatening form of fraud. It varies greatly and mostly used by fraudsters to access personal or confidential information such as username, PIN, password etc.

Type of Cyber or Internet Fraud

  • Email Scam - Email that mimic reputable company to trick the receivers into sharing personal or financial information as well as downloading malware.
  • Phishing Website - Phishing website is created to trick users into thinking they are on a legitimate website and subsequently perform banking activities or reveal personal information.
  • Malware Scam - Malware includes viruses, spyware, and other unwanted applications that are installed on your computer or mobile devices without your consent. It allows fraudster to access your document and monitor your online activities.
  • Online Shopping Scam - Fraudsters may pose as legitimate sellers on a genuine retailer site. Alternatively, fraudster may deceive victims into installing malicious application or click on a link to fill in the victims’ personal or banking credentials when the victims purchase the products. Such products usually offered at a highly discounted price with amazing features.
  • Phone SIM Hijack - Fraudsters may contact your mobile carrier and convince them to switch your account to a SIM card in their possession. Once fraudsters have access to your phone number, they start breaking into your accounts.


How to protect yourself:

  • Do not give out money or personal information to phone calls, emails or text messages from unfamiliar companies or persons.
  • Do not install application or software from unknown sources.
  • Always keep your devices, anti-virus and anti-malware program updated.
